The Kansas City Chiefs are set to square off with the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 of the 2023 NFL preseason.
The team has wrapped up their 2023 training camp and will now look to the preseason to get them continued preparation for the upcoming year. Patrick Mahomes and the starters are due for extended playing time in this game, but how much playing time exactly is yet to be determined. How long the Cardinals keep their top team in the game could make all difference according to Andy Reid, but look for performance to be the deciding factor in how long the starters play for.

First-team effort and energy?
Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo, Dave Toub, Nick Bolton, and Patrick Mahomes were all not pleased with the effort and energy of the first-team unit in preseason Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints. This week they'll be looking to change things as Mahomes wants to see one thing out of the starters in every game phase.
Setting a championship standard begins now, and the bottom line is that their performance last week wasn't good enough. Marked improvement is necessary.
Concerning field conditions
The hybrid playing surface at Arizona's State Farm Stadium did not look great in preseason Week 1 between the Broncos and Cardinals. Andy Reid insists the team has done their homework on the field. Despite looking poor last week, the grass playing surface is gripping well. It's hard for fans not to be a little concerned after the injuries to Trent McDuffie and Harrison Butker in Week 1 of the regular season last year, plus the slip-and-slide conditions of the field during Super Bowl LVII.
5 players to keep an eye on:
- RB La'Mical Perine: Perine was third-in-line for snaps behind CEH and Jerick McKinnon during the final week of training camp. It appears that he has surpassed rookie running back Deneric Prince. Will that be the case in Arizona on Saturday?
- LT Prince Tega Wanogho: After a few seasons of development, PTW looks as if he might be ready for playing time in the NFL. He was smooth in his 2023 preseason debut. Another clean game in pass protection and the run game would be encouraging.
- DT Danny Shelton: The former 2015 first-round draft pick is pushing for a roster spot after spending 2022 on the practice squad. Will his performance in Week 1 be rewarded with first-team snaps against the Cardinals?
- CB Kahlef Hailassie: An interception against the Saints has him on the radar. A continuation of his success from a week ago could be the difference between waivers and making the 53-man roster.
- WR Kekoa Crawford: This undrafted wideout got some national attention from NFL Network's Peter Schrager this week. Look for Crawford to build on his standout preseason Week 1 performance. He could turn some heads with Nikko Remigio expected to be out of the game.
