Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid had a one-word update for reporters at training camp when asked about the status of DT Chris Jones' holdout.
In what has become a weekly ask, Reid took a question regarding the status of Jones. He remains away from the team in a contract-related grievance as he seeks a long-term extension. Unfortunately, it all appears to be status quo at this time.
Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick asked Reid, "Has there been any communication, any movement, any expectations?"
"No," Reid said with a quick hesitation and then a shake of the head.
Reid wasn't the only one asked about Jones following practice on Tuesday. Within the context of Jones skipping out on preseason Week 1's game against the New Orleans Saints, starting LB Nick Bolton was asked about what they were missing without the All-Pro defensive tackle on the field.
“Chris (Jones) is a special talent, man,” Bolton told reporters. “No question about it. At the same time, we've got guys who we're working with. Guys who are putting it all on the line, putting their blood, sweat, and tears into it, man. I'm rocking with the guys we have here. We hope to get him back soon. We understand what he brings to the table. He makes our defense exponentially better, man. At the end of the day, we've got the guys who we've got here. Those guys are putting their all into it. So, we're going to keep working with these guys, man. Come in every single day, put your heart on the line, and see where it takes you. That's where we're at with it.”
You can hardly blame Bolton for keeping his focus on the players who are in attendance at training camp and participating in the preseason. He knows how impactful Jones can be, but he can only worry about those who are in the trenches with him at the moment. When Jones takes care of his business and rejoins the team, it'll be go time.
Brett Veach previously mentioned that negotiations with Jones' camp had stagnated, but that he expected them to heat up as the season drew closer. At this point, it's unrealistic to expect the 29-year-old out at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri for training camp. With that said, we could see things pick up as the month winds down and Week 1 draws near.
