This offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs was one that a lot of media and fans would call a whirlwind, with a lot of the attention being on star pass rusher Chris Jones. He held out all the way until Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
When the Chiefs kicked off opening week against the Detroit Lions, their best defensive player was in a suit watching the game with his agents. He wanted to get paid big-time money. Instead, the Chiefs offered him a one-year deal that had everything he wanted within the incentives.
Not only did he get another ACF Championship in the win over the Baltimore Ravens, but he also got a huge payday. Here is how Field Yates of ESPN broke down the payday he got against the Baltimore Ravens:
A win and a payday: by being named first-team All-Pro and the Chiefs advancing to the Super Bowl, DT Chris Jones has now earned another $1M incentive. And a chance to win his 3rd Lombardi Trophy.
The Chiefs will have a tough decision to make this offseason, as this could very well be the last season we see Jones in a Chiefs uniform. However, if he wants to come back on a much more reasonable deal in terms of what the Chiefs can offer while still bringing L'Jarius Sneed back, winning another Super Bowl would probably help in that aspect.
Jones didn't have quite the career year he did last season, but at the same time, the Chiefs did not need him to. They still had, and have, the best defense they have had in the Patrick Mahomes era. But there is still work to do. I can guarantee you that if you were to ask Jones which he would rather have – another Super Bowl or the money he just made, he would likely say another ring.
Chiefs are making a big mistake with Chris Jones
The Kansas City Chiefs are making all the wrong decisions when it comes to handling Chris Jones’ contract extension.
