Kansas City Chiefs WR Justyn Ross has been the talk of the Chiefs Kingdom after dominating on the practice field during training camp at St. Joseph, Missouri. The highlight-reel plays have been flowing in on a near-daily basis, with the team feeding the hype on social media.
It's a big departure from a season ago when Ross flashed some skills early in the offseason, but he was quickly placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. To see Ross make these types of plays now in training camp is no surprise to one notable former teammate.
Speaking to media members on Monday, Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence was asked about his former Clemson teammate and whether he'd seen all the highlights coming out of Chiefs training camp.
“Yeah, I have seen them. It makes me feel happy for him," Lawrence told reporters. "I played with him, I know him really well. We came in together at Clemson. I mean, he's a great player, great player, and just the person he is. He’s got a great work ethic and to see obviously the battles he has had to go through, some of the adversity. It’s cool to see him kind of getting this opportunity and I hope he continues to play well and takes it and runs and the Chiefs use him well — I think they will.
“So, it’s been awesome to see from him. Obviously, I have seen that a million times in practice, so I am not surprised at all. But to see him get that opportunity, it makes me happy and I’m just excited for him.”
Ross, of course, posted some big numbers with Lawrence as a Freshman and Sophomore for the Tigers back in 2018 and 2019. The two connected for a monster performance during the National Championship Game against Alabama in 2018, with Ross catching six passes for 153 yards and a score.
Perhaps no one knows the extent of Ross' ability as a playmaker than Lawrence. He's seen him at his best and he's seen the adversity that he's had to overcome after undergoing a congenital fusion in his spine during college.
Ross has battled his way back for this opportunity, and it's hard to imagine him letting it slip through his fingers. It's been clear through his performance thus far that he's intent on making the most of each day.
