There are a whole lot of things that are different this season for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Of course, no more Tyreek Hill on the team, which also means the offense is almost completely different. The weapons from last season that are still here are Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
As for the defense, it's pretty different as well. Tyrann Mathieu, the former captain, and the heart and soul of the defense is also gone. The Chiefs didn't extend him, so he took his talents to New Orleans to play for his hometown Saints.
Then the Chiefs brought in Justin Reid from Houston and drafted a ton of defensive backs and an edge as well.
This team is different, but that doesn't mean they are bad. In fact, the coaching staff is excited about some of the new pieces, especially the young secondary.
"I like the speed they play with," Reid said to the media on Monday. "I think Juan has kind of done a good job with helping everyone out back there and managing that from a players standpoint back there.
"It looks like we've got good speed and range and those types of things, there are going to be some hiccups here and there. When you have young guys that's what happens. I think in the long haul we will be okay with the guys we have got there."
Coach Reid is right, they will make mistakes. However, I think the more they play, and the deeper into the season the Chiefs get, the fewer mistakes we will see.
The speed is a great thing, as it's something you can't teach. The Chiefs will face a ton of receiving corps this season that have great speed. Teams like Arizona in Week 1, the Chargers in Week 2, the Bengals in Week 13, and of course so many more.
This secondary is built for the future, and the coaching staff couldn't be more excited about it. Now, they need to put in the work during the regular season. It's going to be hard, and the team will struggle, but it will only get better.
The Arizona Cardinals are a great way to start the season to see how the young secondary handles NFL talent.
