Christmas used to be dominated by the NBA in the sports television world, but the NFL has now blown them out of the water. According to Warren Sharp, both of last year's Christmas Day games garnered over 24 million views, whereas the most-watch NBA game received just 7.7 million views.
The Kansas City Chiefs have played on each of the past two Christmas Days. In 2023 they were defeated by the Las Vegas Raiders 20-14. It was ugly game by the Chiefs, as they committed two turnovers and only converted on 5-16 third downs. However, Kansas City turned things around after that loss and went on to win Super Bowl LVIII.
In 2024 the Chiefs had a much better showing on Christmas, beating the Steelers 29-10 in Pittsburgh. That was the third game played by K.C. in an 11-day stretch, in which it remarkably won all three. The Chiefs also clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC with that victory, giving them a much-needed 24-day break before the divisional round of the postseason.
Will the Chiefs play on Christmas for the third year in a row? We won't know until the 2025 regular season schedule is released in May, but it's safe to say that they have a high probability to do so. K.C. has been the most dominant team in all of professional sports for nearly a decade and is a guarantee to deliver ratings. It will also very likely be playing in a high-stakes game that late in the season.
Opinions from fans on their team playing on Christmas vary. Some like it, and others are too busy with everything that comes with the holiday to be able to focus on the game. It's possible that the NFL gives the Chiefs a break this year, but they could also play on Black Friday again as they did in 2024.

A pretty good April Fools’ Day joke from the Kansas City Chiefs.
