New Chiefs RB Dameon Pierce assigned perfect jersey number, makes Kansas City practice debut on Tuesday
The Kansas City Chiefs’ newest running back officially has a jersey number and made his practice debut.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ newest practice squad running back has officially been assigned a jersey number, participated in a practice session, and has the head coach’s attention.
New Chiefs RB Dameon Pierce was spotted at practice on Tuesday, wearing the No. 34 jersey number. During Andy Reid’s tenure, the No. 34 jersey has been worn by several running backs. Samaje Perine wore it most recently for Kansas City last season, but the number has also been worn by Deneric Prince, Darwin Thompson, and, most notably, by Knile Davis.
Pierce actually might closely resemble Davis in terms of his stature, playstyle, and special teams ability.
With the Houston Texans, Pierce wore jersey No. 31, which is currently worn by rookie LB Jeffrey Bassa. In college with the Florida Gators, Pierce wore No. 27, which S Chamarri Conner now wears. In high school, Pierce wore No. 3, which is retired in Kansas City (Jan Stenerud), and No. 29, which Kareem Hunt wears.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid shares first impressions of Dameon Pierce ahead of practice
Asked about his expectations for new practice squad RB Dameon Pierce, Chiefs HC Andy Reid was hesitant to overcommit to anything before his first practice with the team. The goal for the moment is to get him acclimated to the system and see what he can do.
“Yeah, that’s the main thing right now,” Reid said. “Just get in and learn what we’re doing, and then we’ll take it from there. He’s been productive. So, you know, good player, Brett’s (Veach) always doing a nice job finding guys and adding them to the roster. And so we’ll just see kind of play by here, see how it goes here.”
Week 13 against the Dallas Cowboys is certainly out of the picture, especially with RB Isiah Pacheco expected to return to action. At the same time, it’s hard not to wonder about the role that Pierce will play against his former team, the Houston Texans, in Week 14. He could certainly help serve some looks on the scout team that week, but will he be called up and have a role on offense or special teams? That remains to be seen.
