The Kansas City Chiefs were one of the worst teams in the league last year at bringing down the quarterback.

They finished 29th in the league in team sacks, with just 31 total takedowns. On Sunday, in the season opener, the Chiefs could be faced with some of the same problems, as they will take on one of the league's best at evading pressure.

One of those guys is Kyler Murray, whom the Chiefs play Sunday. Naturally, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is well aware of how Murray can give a team headaches with his ability to run.

"… He's electric like [Baltimore Ravens QB] Lamar [Jackson]. This guy gives you the same headaches that all of those guys that are a threat to run, not just on design quarterback runs, but when he decides to do it, especially on a pass play," said Spagnuolo.

"He has a unique feel for finding that [man defense], and when he takes off and gets north or south, you guys have seen that that could be a problem."

The Arizona Cardinals were a middle-of-the-pack team last year when it came to allowing sacks. They allowed 41, 10 more than the Chiefs, but with a worse offensive line.

The main reason they did not have more is because of how mobile Murray is. But, that's what makes him one of the league's top quarterbacks. And it's something that can keep the Chiefs from improving in an area that is in desperate need of a turnaround in 2022.

With the way the defensive line has been reconstructed, hopefully, we can see the Chiefs be successful in that area of the defense. They need to put pressure on Murray if they want to win. If they don't he can make them pay, in all types of ways.

The Chiefs have the players they need to be successful in rushing the passer this year. They added Carlos Dunlap, who is a few sacks away from having 100 career sacks. They also added George Karlaftis, a rookie edge rusher from Purdue who has so much upside.

Frank Clark also looks to be in much better shape than he was last season. In training camp, we were able to see him bend more than we are used to seeing.

Of course, the Chiefs also have Chris Jones, one of the best defensive tackles in the game.

The Kansas City Chiefs will have their hands full, and Spagnuolo is right, Murray can definitely cause headaches.

If the Chiefs want to win on Sunday and start their season 1-0, it starts with containing Murray. Those guys on the defensive line, along with some of the linebackers, will be responsible for that.

Be watching on Sunday to see what kind of defenses Spagnuolo draws up for the Cardinals. The last time these two teams played each other, Murray wasn’t in the league yet. So, the Chiefs will get their first taste of this type of mobile quarterback in just a few short days.
