The Chiefs got a lot out of safety Jaden Hicks last season as a rookie.

The 2025 season for the Kansas City Chiefs has been very odd for several reasons. Of course, the main weirdness is the season as a whole – being in the playoff hunt, on the brink of elimination, this early in the year. Then there is the bad luck and the injuries. You can also include the different personnel groupings we have seen.

Jaden Hicks and Nohl Williams are two of the bigger questions regarding this season. Williams, a promising rookie, has trouble seeing the field as a cornerback. Hicks, a second-year guy who showed promise as a rookie, hasn’t seen the field much either.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo calls out Hicks for some mistakes he’s made

“I think if you asked Jaden, he’d tell you he’s kind of had an up-and-down season, but there are some flashes of good football there,” DC Steve Spagnuolo said. “ I have brought him in a few times, and he’s made some mistakes that I wouldn’t have thought he would’ve made in his second season. I like the way he gets himself ready for games.”

Hicks has made some mistakes, but he cannot improve if he doesn’t play. You learn from your mistakes, and you learn by live game repetition. It’s clear Hicks has the talent and the potential to be a great, and we know he does because we saw it all last season as a rookie in that third safety role.

Mike Edwards is a veteran who no longer has the same speed he once did. Hicks will have to take over eventually. The coaching staff has to have faith in him. Hicks has played only 23 more snaps this season than he did in his rookie season. That may sound like a lot more, but it’s really not.

Hopefully, down the stretch of this season, Spags can get Hicks on the field more. If the season is lost and there’s no shot at making the playoffs, Spags definitely has to try to get him on the field.
