Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to remind people of this after a fake tweet about his future went viral.
It's commonplace in this age of social media for trolls to impersonate some of the league's top reporters to trick people. This was the case when a fake ESPN Adam Schefter with the handle @AdamSche1fer posted the following:
"Chiefs' HC Andy Reid told reporters that WR Deandre Hopkins, informed him this morning he has decided to retire from the NFL.
Hopkins retires after a 11 year career."
The blatant spelling errors and grammatical issues should have raised alarms, but some big accounts with large followings were tricked into sharing this information as fact. At the time of this article, the post had over 1.5 million impressions. Hopkins caught wind of the deception and took to X to set the record straight himself.
"Don't know what you heard but I'm not done yet," Hopkins wrote.
While Hopkins might not be ready to retire just yet, his future in Kansas City is still very much uncertain. In six days, Hopkins' contract will be voided, placing him among the Chiefs' free agents for the 2025 NFL season.
There's no guarantee that Hopkins will be back in Kansas City after this year. However, his message to the Chiefs Kingdom after the Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles suggests that he might be interested in returning to the Chiefs to finish the job in 2025.
Hopkins finished the 2024 NFL season in Kansas City with 41 receptions for 437 yards and four touchdowns. He had just three receptions and 29 yards for a touchdown on eight targets during the playoffs and Super Bowl LIX.
