The return of defensive lineman Charles Omenihu has made a huge impact on the Kansas City Chiefs' defense.
Omenihu made his season debut in Week 13 after tearing his ACL in last year's AFC Championship game 10 months ago. He has recorded three tackles and a sack in three games played, but it's what he's done for his teammates that has made the real difference.
Omenihu's ability to line up at different spots along the defensive line and get a push has really opened things up for other Chiefs defenders. Chris Jones recorded two sacks during Omenihu's first game back, one of which came with Omenihu lined up right beside him.
In 2023 Jones and Omenihu combined for 17.5 sacks, and are already wreaking havoc on opposing offenses this year. When they're not bringing down quarterbacks they're affecting them with pressure, and are also a force against the run.
While speaking to the media on Tuesday, linebacker Chiefs Nick Bolton discussed the impact that Omenihu has made since returning, and also revealed that Jones and Omenihu's teammates have nicknamed them the "Twin Towers."
"We kind of move him [Omenihu] around a little bit," Bolton said. "He's also a tall guy, so his presence inside helps a lot, especially with quarterbacks that are a little bit shorter. Having him and Chris in the middle, we call them the 'Twin Towers', especially in the redzone. Omenihu definitely adds some some variation to our pass rush, moving him around a little bit. And guys have to put two hands on two guys, not just Chris [Jones]. Moving them away from pressures, it kind of adds some different things. We hope Spags [defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] keeps putting those things in and keeps the ball rolling as we keep going."
The Chiefs' defense has recorded 11 sacks with Omenihu back in the lineup. An improved pass rush is going to be crucial to Kansas City's chances at a three-peat. While Omenihu was out, the pass rush was often just a tick late, which makes a world of difference against elite quarterbacks. With Jones and Omenihu dominating up front, Spagnuolo's blitzing scheme has become more lethal.
