The Kansas City Chiefs unfortunately did not survive the first half of their preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals without injuries.

Starting cornerback Jaylen Watson exited the game during the first quarter and was placed in concussion protocol (H/T Nate Taylor).

It wasn’t clear that Watson was showing concussion-like symptoms, but somebody from the booth saw something from him that sparked concern, forcing Watson to leave the game. He was quickly ruled out, especially since there’s no reason for him to return to a preseason game.

Late during the second quarter, safety Deon Bush suffered an Achilles injury on a non-contact play.

Between having to be carted off and the injury being diagnosed so quickly, Bush is likely facing a bad scenario. It’s a tough break for the 10-year veteran, who was looking to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster as a backup safety and special teams contributor. Bush has been battling a hamstring injury that cost him multiple practices throughout training camp.

Bush has been a solid player for Kansas City since arriving to the team in 2022. His signature moment with the Chiefs was intercepting Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to seal the 2023 AFC Championship Game. Bush signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs back in February.

Coach Andy Reid should give an update on both Watson and Bush after the game. Watson is looking to play a full season after missing 11 games last season with an ankle injury. 2025 is a big year for Watson as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
