Chris Jones comes clean about the Chiefs’ biggest error against the Broncos that could have prevented a lump of coal on Christmas Day
Chris Jones jumped offside on a critical fourth-down call against the Broncos.
The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Denver Broncos on Christmas Day. It may be better to say Chiefs fans won in that loss. The team was competitive, actually played the young guys, and the game was far more entertaining than it should have been. The Chiefs could have won that game, which makes everything that much crazier. Had it not been for Chris Jones jumping offside, who knows what would have happened?
Chiefs DT Chris Jones takes the blame for the fourth-down penalty
“I know, I’m beating myself up,” Jones told reporters after the loss in a joking way. “Yeah, I could have saved us four points. I felt like the guard moved. In a critical situation, I’ve got to be better… I knew it, I knew it. We were right there.”
Jones has had a few moments like that this season – uncharacteristic moments, to say the least. He still had a very good game, and we can joke about this penalty and momentary lapse because the Chiefs have really nothing to play for. Jones had the sack in the game, a few pressures, and really got his hands dirty when being double-teamed. There’s still some juice there, despite what the stat sheet says every single week.
Jones has to cut down on those mistakes. The whole team does, and they know that.
“This year taught us a lot of valuable lessons as a team, and we’re going to continue to build off of that,” Jones said.
The Chiefs had some very good moments on both sides of the ball, showing resilience despite the challenges, which is promising for a team playing a ton of guys who don’t usually face the best team in the NFL, like you could argue they did on Thursday Night.
As long as these mistakes aren’t as common next season, when this team is likely back to competing, then we can all laugh about this one.
