For the second time in the last five years, the Kansas City Chiefs will be entering a season where they are tasked with defending the Super Bowl title. That's why building their roster for the 2023 season is so important.

They started off things with a boom, by grabbing one of the best offensive tackles on the market not named Orlando Brown Jr. Now, after several other moves later, their depth chart is one step closer to being finished.

With how hectic free agency is though, it can be hard to keep up with every move the team has made. Let's go ahead and look at how their depth chart has filled out after the first full week of free agency.

Offense

Patrick Mahomes

Shane Buechele, Chris Oladokun

As we all know, the starting job for the quarterback is already locked down. While there are two other quarterbacks currently on the roster, the Chiefs still need to find a better backup, one who can replace what Chad Henne brought to the team.

Isiah Pacheco kind of has to be the first-string running back next season after how he performed with Clyde Edwards-Helaire out due to injury. In a way, Pacheco stole his job. As the depth chart currently sits, I think the Chiefs have no choice but to make Edwards-Helaire the backup.

Receiver is where things get weird because of who the Chiefs currently have on the roster, and because of who they lost. They have Skyy Moore, who I think obviously has to be the slot with who the Chiefs currently have. Marquez Valdes-Scantling can play the X or the Z because of his size and speed, but Kadarius Toney will likely be the X. All of this is based on whether or not they grab another receiver in free agency.

We know who tight end one is, and tight ends two and three are almost interchangeable, basically depending on if Fortson is completely healthy or not. But, Noah Gray had an impressive postseason last year, where he made huge plays throughout the playoffs.

As for the offensive line, Jawaan Taylor has never played left tackle for an entire NFL season, but he has convinced the Chiefs that he can do it. Other than that new addition, the other position on the line we need to see get fixed is right tackle unless they want an injury prone Lucas Niang starting.

Defense

PositionStarterReserves

Left defensive end

George Karlaftis

Malik Herring, Joshua Kaindoh

Left defensive tackle

Derrick Nnadi

Danny Shelton, Daniel Wise

Right defensive tackle

Chris Jones

Tershawn Wharton

Right defensive end

Charles Omenihu

Mike Danna

WLB

Drue Tranquill

Willie Gay Jr., Cole Christiansen

MLB

Nick Bolton

Leo Chenal, Jack Cochrane

Left cornerback

Jaylen Watson

Nazeeh Johnson

Strong safety

Justin Reid

Free safety

Bryan Cook

Mike Edwards

Right cornerback

L’Jarius Sneed

Joshua Williams

Nickle

Trent McDuffie

Dicaprio Bootle

George Karlaftis has earned the right to be the full-time starter on the edge. He started every game last year but only played 64% of all defensive snaps. Derrick Nnadi could see his snaps split with Omenihu, who also plays inside a ton too. Some of his best work has come from the inside.

The linebacker position is weird now. They just signed Drue Tranquill, who will basically play the same position as Willie Gay Jr. The Chiefs will need to make a tough decision on who they want to start out of the two players. If you ask me, it's Tranquill, who is now the highest-paid guy at the position. Do you think they would pay him that much money to not start him? It will be interesting to see what Spanuolo does.

The cornerback unit is basically the same as last year, with all of the young guys holding it down. McDuffie will likely be the nickel while Sneed will grab the other team's best receiver.

Safety is where things start to change. I think the Chiefs will give Bryan Cook a chance at being the main starter and have Edwards in that third safety role we saw a ton last season.

Special Teams

PositionStarterReserves

Kicker

Harrison Butker

Punter

Tommy Townsend

Long Snapper

James Winchester

Kick returner

Isiah Pacheco

Skyy Moore

Punt returner

Kadarius Toney

Skyy Moore

The two kickers, Butker and Townsend, have both been Aall-Pro players in this league. That isn't a worry at all. Winchester has been the Chiefs' long-snapper for quite some time now. The only issue that lies with the Chiefs' special teams is the returners.

We saw Moore struggle a ton in both spots. But, he got better, as he had a huge punt return against the Bengals. When Pacheco and Toney were in the returner spots, the Chiefs were much better.

Final Word: The Chiefs still have several holes to fill on their team, as they get ready to defense their Super Bowl title. The defense still needs some help on the line, as the depth at every position up front isn't great. On offense, they need better depth, and a true number one receiver in that room. The Chiefs also need more offensive line help, but especially at right tackle. A little depth there wouldn't hurt either.
