The Kansas City Chiefs had to change up some things the last two games, and yet they still walked, or limped in Mahomes' case, away with victories. Now, somehow, someway, they are in the Super Bowl.
Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chiefs had a specific game plan, but they basically had to scrap that due to the Mahomes' injury that occurred during the game. The game plan then went to one where Mahomes could stay in the pocket.
His ankle still bothered him in the AFC Championship, but that game plan was different too. He didn't run a whole lot, in terms of bootlegs, designed runs, RPO, and things of that nature. Yet, on one bad ankle, he still got the job done.
Now the big question is will the game plan and style of the offense in which Mahomes maneuvers will be like it has been as of late or if it will go back to pre-injury Mahomes.
Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator answered the question the best he could without giving anything away.
“I think it’s a mix of both," Bieniemy said. "But, we want to make sure that everything we’re putting in, that we can bring it into next week’s game. And so, you guys know Pat (Mahomes). Pat’s not going to shy away from anything. And it’s our job more than anything to protect him from himself.
"And so, our job is to make sure that we’re putting together the right game plan that’s going to help us to be at our best. But on top of that, making sure that we’re looking out for Pat in the meantime. So, we’re not going to change anything. We know that Pat will be at his best when his best is needed. You guys know him, he’s a competitor. He’s not going to shy away from anything.”
Obviously, we would love to have Mahomes at full strength, but both styles and game plans seemed to work very well. So, I wouldn't be too worried about either.
It's honestly probably better that they do a mix. The Chiefs seemed to have some pretty good success with the style they played last week. I think they could manage both for the offense's sake and Mahomes' sake.
Either way, I think the game plan we see by the Chiefs' offense will be one that will put them in the best positions to succeed against a good defense. Why? Well, that's what Andy Reid and company always do.
