The full NFL schedule will be released on Thursday night but the Kansas City Chiefs have already found out how they'll be spending Week One of the 2023 season.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Thursday morning that the Chiefs will open the 2023 season on Thursday night (September 7) against the Detroit Lions.
There were some who felt like the Chiefs would open the season against the Philadelphia Eagles, setting up a rematch of Super Bowl LVII.
The NFL, however, wisely opted against scheduling the Eagles and the Chiefs in Week One.
Kansas City's matchup against Philadelphia is going to be one of the most anticipated games of the season. In fact, it could be a preview of Super Bowl LVIII as both the Chiefs and the Eagles are viewed as favorites to reach the big game this upcoming season.
Why would the NFL want to play that game in Week One — especially in the kick-off game?
It doesn't matter what game is scheduled in Week One, people are going to tune in. It could be the Houston Texans against the Tennessee Titans and it would still draw huge ratings.
The NFL is smart for saving the Chiefs' matchup against the Eagles (which is a home game for KC) for later in the season while still scheduling a game in Week One between Kansas City and Detroit that will provide plenty of intrigue. There's a lot of hype surrounding the Lions right now and if they open the season with a win against the Chiefs, it will only serve to intensify the hype.
Likewise, if the Chiefs handle business against the Lions, it will solidify Kansas City as the favorites in the AFC.
Chiefs vs Lions will be a fun kick-off game while saving a fascinating matchup between Kansas City and Philly for later in the season. Job well done, NFL.
