The Kansas City Chiefs have announced a trio of roster moves ahead of their Week 14 game against the Houston Texans. The Chiefs are dealing with numerous injuries and needed to make these moves to field the best possible roster for a do-or-die Week 14 game against a scorching-hot Texans team.

The moves include placing an injured defender on injured reserve, signing a veteran defender to the 53-man roster in his place, and elevating a practice squad player to reinforce depth.

Let’s break it all down.

Chiefs second-year DB Chris Roland-Wallace placed on injured reserve

After missing Week 13’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys with a back injury that he suffered in the Week 12 win over the Indianapolis Colts, the Chiefs have placed DB Chris Roland-Wallace on injured reserve. He’ll miss the next four games at a minimum, meaning the earliest he could return to action is Week 18 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The reality is that Roland-Wallace’s season might be over, and it comes at a time when he was really starting to pick up steam, carving out a role as the Chiefs’ slot defender in their big nickel sub-packages. This had been a boon to Kansas City because it kept Chamarri Conner out of the slot and at safety, where he’s performed better. It also kept Trent McDuffie at outside cornerback.

Chiefs veteran S Mike Edwards signed to the 53-man roster

With a vacant roster spot, the Chiefs promoted veteran S Mike Edwards to the 53-man roster. Edwards was a key piece of Kansas City’s run to Super Bowl LVIII in 2023. He appeared in 17 regular-season games, including five starts. He had a penchant for getting after the football, amassing 51 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two fumble recoveries, including one returned 101 yards for a TD.

He started all four games for Kansas City during the postseason that year, including the Super Bowl, recording 12 total tackles, an interception, and two passes defended. He was promoted via standard elevation just last week and recorded four combined tackles and a pass defended on a near-interception.

Chiefs use C.J. Hanson’s final regular-season practice squad standard elevation

With Trey Smith listed as doubtful for Week 14, the Chiefs have opted to elevate second-year OL C.J. Hanson from the practice squad for the third time this season. He was active during the game Smith missed earlier this season, and he was elevated for the Week 9 game against the Bills, when Smith was listed as questionable.

He seems to be the No. 3 right guard option for Kansas City behind Mike Caliendo. This practice squad elevation means Hanson has no more standard elevations left unless the Chiefs reach the postseason, when practice squad elevations reset. I’d wager that Smith is inactive in Week 14 and returns from his ankle injuries in Week 15. Andy Reid described him as “closer” than RT Jawaan Taylor (triceps) on Friday.
