Kansas City Chiefs fought off multiple AFC West rivals, Eagles GM Howie Roseman to sign new RB Dameon Pierce
Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach had his work cut out for him with the amount of interest that new RB Dameon Pierce received.
The Kansas City Chiefs will officially sign RB Dameon Pierce to the practice squad later this afternoon, but getting the deal done was no easy task for GM Brett Veach.
According to reports from KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Pierce was very much a wanted man after he cleared waivers following his release from the Houston Texans. Wilson says that Pierce had contract offers from the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, and Philadelphia Eagles, among other clubs. He ultimately chose to go to Kansas City despite the interest from seven other NFL clubs.
9News reporter Mike Klis confirmed what Wilson had to say about Denver, claiming they were “in strong” to sign him to their practice squad.
But wait, it gets even better.
Wilson says that Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman made a “strong push” to sign Pierce. Philly had previously inquired about Pierce in a trade with Houston, but couldn’t reach a deal. Wilson says that Roseman even called Pierce over the weekend in an attempt to get him to sign with the Eagles.
It says a lot about the caliber of player that the Chiefs are getting that so many other clubs were interested in signing him. For him to choose Kansas City, it also says a lot about the plan the coaching staff seemingly has for Pierce.
The Chiefs sold Dameon Pierce on a clear role in 2025 and the future
The Chiefs were able to fight off so many other teams in this situation because they sold Pierce on his role with the team, both in the interim and for the future. There’s a clear path from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, thanks to his contributions on special teams as a kickoff return specialist. There’s also a game to look forward to against his former team in Week 14.
Dameon Pierce’s career NFL kick return stats
- Kick returns: 20
- Kick return yardage: 656
- Kick return touchdowns: 1
- Long kick return: 98
The Chiefs, of course, also have a considerable need for running back depth with Isiah Pacheco fighting a knee injury and Kareem Hunt taking a beating each week. At just 25 years old, there’s also a path for him to be a long-term part of the Chiefs’ backfield rotation if things go well. Rookie RB Brashard Smith remains the only running back under team control past the 2025 NFL season.
