The Kansas City Chiefs defense stepped up, and they absolutely balled out on Saturday, giving Chiefs fans an early Christmas present on Christmas Eve.
It was all facets of the game for the defense. The pass rush was there when it needed to be. The linebackers were making tackles in the first and second level in the run game. And the defensive backs, well, don't even get me started on them. The rookies and young guys came to play ball on Christmas Eve.
"In this game, it was our DB’s honestly," defensive end Frank Clark said. "I look at my young guys, look at that back end and just tell them ‘Just keep playing.’ Make your mistakes while you’re young. You make them early so when you get to this point in your career — year eight or whatever — you understand what’s asked of you, you understand what’s needed of you in those clutch moments.
"You see guys make mistakes like holding or whatever it is we always tell them ‘You good man, wash it away. Have short-term memory and make the next play you can."
The Chiefs have some rookies that could be absolute steals, all around the defense, but especially in the secondary.
Trent McDuffie, Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson, and Joshua Williams have all played very significant roles on the defense this year, and played extremely well on Saturday.
Just think, those four guys, and L'Jarius Sneed and Juan Thornhill are all very young, and will likely be the Chiefs' secondary for years to come. They are good now, as rookies and young players. Just imagine how much better they can get.
I think Frank Clark also knows that. If this defense can establish a good secondary over the next few years, it could be the key to keeping this dynasty alive, well, if you are one of the people who call it a dynasty.
Sneed is already one of the best cornerbacks in the league in just his third season in the NFL. Watson has made some huge plays, including the 99-yard pick-six. Williams has stepped up and guarded some big-name players like JaMarr Chase and Stefon Diggs, and gotten better from it, and Bryan Cook has been a special teams ace and a hard hitter on the defense.
The Chiefs are in good hands for years to come it seems.
