The Kansas City Chiefs have a free agent from their 2022 team that hinted at a possible retirement coming sooner than imagined.
Melvin Gordon had a rough year last year; before he eventually went on to win a Super Bowl ring. When he was with the Denver Broncos in 2021, he was nearly a 1,000-yard rusher and accomplished the feat in 2017. In 2022, he had a fumbling issue and was cut from the Broncos. The Chiefs picked him up and added him to the practice squad.
Now he is a free agent. The Chiefs aren't expected to sign him, as Gordon expects a role on a 53-man roster for 2023. When he went on Good Morning Football on Wednesday, he let everyone know what was next for him, and it sounded like he could be planning to retire earlier than expected.
"Well, you know, I got the, I got a ring, so, the hard part is done," Gordon said. "I'm just; I'm just looking for somewhere to play, man, you know, just have fun on the back end of things, you know, I just want to enjoy it [football] on the way out."
Gordon has spent some of his offseason detailing his feelings on how the running back position in the NFL is one that "literally sucks," as he put it. His shelf life in the league is short at his position, and he may play another year before he retires. But either way, it sounds like he plans on retiring early.
Gordon was also asked about his ring, which he got at the ring ceremony just last week.
"It looks amazing; it looks amazing, man. It was one of the craziest feelings in the world. You know, obviously, I didn't, I didn't get it the way that I wanted to, but I got it, so I'm going to take it. And honestly, I was so happy. I've never been so happy. It was like tears of joy. It was, it was, I mean, it was the craziest feeling in the world."
If he does retire soon, at least, he got his ring.
