The Kansas City Chiefs got back in the win column against the Carolina Panthers on the road in Week 12. They also escaped the game relatively healthy, which is tremendous news as they have just four days to prepare for their Black Friday game against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 13.
They did have one injury scare, but that turned out to be a false alarm. At some point during the third quarter, third-string TE Peyton Hendershot suffered a calf injury. He was ruled questionable to return to the game just ahead of the fourth quarter, but he was never ruled out of the game.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about Hendershot's injury after the game, confirming the injury situation was bright.
"There are no injuries," Reid told reporters. "Peyton Hendershot had a right calf cramp up on him, but other than that (no injuries). He came back in and did a nice job there."
It's good news that Hendershot's injury isn't viewed as significant. Even as the team's third-string tight end, he'd recently become a reliable target for Patrick Mahomes. He had three receptions on three targets in four games this season, including a key first-down reception. It's the definition of making the most of your opportunity.
The backup tight end position for Kansas City has been marred by injuries this season, and it was difficult to worry that it might've claimed its next victim in Hendershot. First Jody Fortson suffered a serious knee injury during an onside kick in the Chiefs' Week 8 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Then rookie TE Jared Wiley suffered a season-ending ACL injury during practice.
Had this injury turned out worse for Kansas City, the team currently has veteran TE Anthony Firksey on the practice squad. Thankfully, they won't have to worry about the worst-case outcome on this one.
