The Kansas City Chiefs have the best head coach in the entire NFL, as Andy Reid now has three Super Bowl rings. They are so fortunate and lucky that the Philadelphia Eagles fired him long ago. However, one thing that doesn't get talked about enough is the staff he has put around him.
Fans aren't extremely happy with what happened this season with Matt Nagy regarding the regular season blunder they continually had on offense, but he isn't a bad offensive coordinator. Could he have been better? Of course. But the one guy who doesn't get as much praise as he should is defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is now the only coordinator in the history of the NFL to have four Super Bowl rings.
Players like former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill have asked why Spags doesn't get any interviews for head coaching gigs. And the answer is really easy: He has just now settled down in Kansas City. He just got his wife to move to Kansas City in 2023 and has been coaching the Chiefs for five years. So, he may not want to move anytime soon.
However, one former Chiefs player now in the Hall of Fame suggests one wild take that makes sense and would give Spagnuolo the head coaching job he deserves.
"When Andy Reid retires, Spags [Steve Spagnuolo] is certainly going to be one of the guys they consider to be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs when it's all said and done," Chiefs Hall of Famer Tim Grunhard said on 810 Sports.
"I think that's the kind of respect he has around the league now. I think that's the respect he has from the organization. With that re-signing of Spags, I think Andy has two or three, maybe four more years left, and I think Spags takes over right after that. I think that would be a great transition."
The Chiefs are set up for the perfect scenario if this is something that could actually happen. Sure, Spagnuolo's 10-38 record as a head coach with the St. Louis Rams is one heck of a blemish on his resume, but he inherited a terrible situation and hasn't been given a real chance since then. Yet he has been one hell of a defensive coordinator.
If this could happen, the Chiefs would not have to worry about finding a guy who can have good chemistry with their core players because Sganuolo has already been there for so long. Of course, there are also rumors that Eric Bieniemy could be in for the same scenario. However, we may not know until after the 2024 season, as Andy Reid will coach next year.
