Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday.
He earned it after going a perfect 6-6 on field goal attempts against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17. All of his kicks were from at least 43 yards, with a long kick of 54 yards. He also connected on his lone extra point attempt, giving him a career-high 19 total points scored in one game. Butker was instrumental in breaking the Chiefs' three-game home losing streak as Kansas City's offense found the endzone just one time.
This is the fifth time in Butker's career he has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the last coming back in 2020. His 31 field goals on the season tie him with Cairo Santos for the fourth-most in Chiefs history. Butker already owns the franchise record for field goals when he hit 38 back in 2017. His 54-yarder from this past Sunday put him into fourth place in 50+ yard attempts made since 2017.
Butker is having the best season of his career percentage-wise, connecting on 31-33 field goal attempts and a perfect 37-37 extra point opportunities. With the Chiefs' struggles on offense this season, they will continue to lean heavily on him and will need him to be clutch in the postseason. Butker is only the team's second Player of the Week this season, which is the fewest in a single season of the Patrick Mahomes era.
It’s past time for the Chiefs to hold Marquez Valdes-Scantling accountable
