Now that the NFL's free agency period has died down, the realization that the Chiefs have bigger needs than we all think has finally hit. While people are remaining calm within the Chiefs fanbase, as they usually do, the reality is the Chiefs have a lot they need to get done, and soon.

The Chiefs window for another championship is getting smaller, and they need to hit on these draft picks. When you think about draft needs, the basic ones always come up, but there are some that don't.

In the 2022 season, I think fans can expect to see this position group revitalized.

Chiefs need cornerback even more than we think

Over the last few years, the Chiefs have avoided taking a cornerback in the higher rounds outside the lone exception of Juan Thornhill in 2019. They've avoided the position when they needed obvious help. I think it is time they stop dodging the need and recognize what is going on on the defense.

As of right now, the Chiefs have just three players on the roster at cornerback. Now, yes, they have several players listed as defensive backs. However, that can mean a handful of things.

L'Jarius Sneed, the soon-to-be third-year player is one of those players listed on the roster. He has had a great two years so so far in the league, and in fact, at one point was a lockdown cornerback. The Chiefs got him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

One other cornerback on the roster is Rashad Fenton, who is going into his fourth year. Fenton, a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, has shown glimpses of promise the last few years, especially last year.

The one other cornerback on the Chiefs roster is DeAndre Baker, the former first-round pick from the Giants. Baker has dealt with some gruesome injury problems, as well as off-field issues, and has not been exactly what the Chiefs would have hoped for.

Surely fans would have loved for the Chiefs to sign an established veteran cornerback to the roster this off-season. With the youth in that area, it would have been extremely helpful. Now, the Chiefs need to focus on finding a good cornerback early in the draft.

There's little doubt this can turn into a problem if it's not addressed. The Chiefs have to take a corner in this draft, especially when considering all of the offensive improvements in the AFC West. Russell Wilson is a Bronco. Davante Adams is a Raider. And Justin Herbert is the quarterback of the Chargers. All three teams have elite weapons on offense that can make any defense miserable. Especially if said defense is short-handed in the secondary.

The good news, however, is that this is only a temporary problem. And it can be fixed in the upcoming draft.

But if it isn't addressed, it will certainly turn into a permanent problem for 2022.
