It’s been an odd last two years for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

After winning NFL MVP in a landslide for the 2022 season, Mahomes’ statistics have taken a major dip. In 2023 he barely cracked the 4,000-yard passing mark (4,183) and threw for 14 less touchdowns (27) than he did the year previous (41).

In 2024, Mahomes set a career-low in passing yards with 3,928, and tied a career-low with 26 TD passes. However, he managed to lead Kansas City to the Super Bowl in each season, winning it in ’23 and losing in ’24.

Chiefs players and coaches have not shied away from saying that they plan to get back to aggressively pushing the ball down field in 2025. We saw it all throughout training camp, and in the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears. A lot of that will fall on Mahomes’ shoulders, who has had to pull in the reins over the past two seasons.

While speaking to the media on Sunday, coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes not only for the camp he had, but for the leadership he has displayed following K.C.’s disappointing Super Bowl loss back in February.

“I thought he had a good camp all the way all the way through,” Reid said. “He’s a great leader. Wants to know everything, loves that part of it. Asks great questions. I like the way that he’s got some guys back now for a second turn. He’s familiar with them, and trying to take that to another level on game day.

“I know that’s one of his challenges right now, with with the crew that we have, and he feels comfortable with the guys, so that’s a good part. He doesn’t let anything really bother him. He was just full steam ahead with a positive attitude. That’s the thing I appreciate the most. I think he’s taken it up a notch this year, and he’s really had a nice camp. He’s comfortable with the guys that he’s playing with out there.”

Mahomes will be counting on his offensive line and wide receiver corps being improved this season in order to create more explosive plays. He also needs guys to stay healthy after the Chiefs were hit hard by injuries in 2024. If it can all come together, K.C.’s offense should be able to return to elite form, and Mahomes could get back to posting the gaudy numbers we’re accustomed to from him.
