The Chiefs’ Week 2 preseason matchup against the Seattle Seahawks was tough to watch.

Not many starters played, and multiple players suffered injuries. Kansas City will look to end the preseason with some momentum as they host the Bears on Friday night. While speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Andy Reid stated that the starters will play against Chicago.

“Yeah, they’ll start if off for sure,” Reid said of the starters. “Then we’ll see how it goes from there.”

Big names such as QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, DT Chris Jones, and CB Trent McDuffie sat out last week’s game. They will hit the field on Friday and get some work in before the Chiefs’ Week 1 regular season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil on September 5.

This is different from how Reid usually handles the preseason. Prior to this year, the starters have played in the first two (or three) preseason games and sat out the final one. Given the long road trip and rainy weather conditions in Seattle last week, this was a savvy change up on Reid’s part.

However, there’s also injury risks that comes with this decision. It would be unfortunate if a key player was injured in Friday’s game and it impacted their status for the regular season. It only takes one play, as we saw during last year’s preseason with wide receiver Hollywood Brown.

If the Chiefs’ starters play relatively well, they’ll likely be pulled after a couple of series’. It would be beneficial for both the offensive and defensive units get into a little rhythm before facing a tough Chargers team. With that contest being a divisional matchup and how hard Kansas City’s schedule is in 2025, getting off to a 1-0 start will be pretty important.
