The Kansas City Chiefs had one of the best free agent steals in 2023, largely because of a few words that Andy Reid said.
The Chiefs were able to make their defense much better in the 2023 offseason by snagging a few steals in free agency. They got Charles Omenihu, who may be one of the most underrated pass rushers in the league, and they got Drue Tranquill, a move that surprised many.
Tranquill is a linebacker and one of the more underrated ones in the league. He started for the Los Angeles Chargers, another reason it was such a surprising move. But the biggest surprise was how cheap the Chiefs got him.
They were able to get that free agency steal for one reason, really. It was a few words that head coach Andy Reid texted Tranquill.
"I was really honored by the way the Chiefs pursued me, all the way from the front office down to the coaching staff," Tranquill said via NFL.com. "Andy Reid literally texted me the morning of [when] I was going to make my decision, and he was like, 'Think red. Think red. Think Super Bowls .' I just felt really valued over there, felt like they really had a role for me and really wanted me over there."
The Chiefs didn't need a linebacker heading into free agency. They have Nick Bolton, one of the best off-ball linebackers in the league, and Willie Gay, a linebacker that has all the physical tools and insane potential. They also just drafted Leo Chenal.
But, when a guy like Tranquill comes along for $3 million, you take it. He can cover the ball well in the run game, and his coverage skills are probably the best on the team. The Chiefs got a steal, and it's all because of a few phrases Reid texted him.
