The Kansas City Chiefs have at least one tryout player in attendance at the team's mandatory minicamp this week.

According to KPRC2 NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Chiefs are hosting former BYU football defensive tackle Jackson Cravens during the three-day minicamp on a tryout basis. Cravens, of course, played for Andy Reid's alma mater and joins former teammates Kingsley Suamataia and Ryan Rehkow in Kansas City for the next three days.

A transfer from Boise State, Cravens appeared in 12 games for the Cougars in 2023. He recorded 24 total tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack and three passes batted for BYU during that span. In his four years at Boise State, Cravens recorded 73 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, one pass batted, and one forced fumble in 27 games played.

He's listed at 6-foot-2 and 305 pounds and performed well during the Big 12 Pro Day, posting a 5.26s 40-yard dash, 29 repetitions of 225 on the bench press, and a 4.75s short shuttle run.

Jackson's cousins, Su’a Cravens and Jordan Cravens Cameron, both played in the NFL. Su'a was a second-round draft pick by Washington in the 2016 NFL draft after playing college ball at USC. Cameron was a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2011 also after playing college ball at USC.

The Chiefs have some level of need at the defensive tackle position when it comes to competitive depth. They didn't select any players at the position in the 2024 NFL draft and only signed one defensive tackle in undrafted free agency (Fabien Lovett). With the off-field situation surrounding Isaiah Buggs, it certainly makes sense to bring in a player like Cravens on a tryout basis for the next three days. If it goes well, they could sign him right away or they could bring him back for training camp next month.
