Update: The Chiefs have informed reporters that Nazeeh Johnson left practice with a hamstring injury. Ross did not sustain an injury, but left practice for what might have been an equipment issue.
The Kansas City Chiefs continued with their second day of padded practice on Saturday, working a lot more short-yardage and run plays compared to other portions of practice. They also had full contact today, not simply thud or wrap periods, with players getting taken to the ground.
The team was still without Justin Reid, BJ Thompson, Joe Thuney, Charles Omenihu, Jaylen Watson, and Derrick Nnadi, who all remain on injury lists. They also didn't have Justin Watson out at practice after he suffered a foot injury on Wednesday. Watson is expected to return sometime next week, potentially on Wednesday at the latest if they want to give him some extra time. He could even be back before the weekend is up.
Naturally, more contact means more potential for injuries. Because of that, the Chiefs had a few players leave practice early on Saturday, but only one of those appears to be for an injury.
Chiefs CB Nazeeh Johnson leaves practice early. . . again
For the second time during training camp, third-year CB Nazeeh Johnson left practice early. He left Wednesday's practice early after landing awkwardly on his surgically repaired knee. That turned out to be a decision made out of an abundance of caution. It happened near the end of practice, so there was really no reason for him to get back out there.
This time around, Johnson came up limping after a drill early in practice. He walked over to the training tent to get things checked out on his own accord. KC Star columnist Sam McDowell reported that it looked as if Johnson wanted to come back to practice before he left the field entirely, but walked up the hill instead of riding on a cart.
Chiefs WR Justyn Ross rides up the hill in the back of the cart, but it's a false alarm
As first reported by The Athletic's Nate Taylor, last year's training camp darling, WR Justyn Ross, left practice on the back of the cart. This is the first time a player has ridden up the hill on the back of the cart this season, and it turned out to be no big deal.
No one spotted an apparent injury during practice, our friend Chris Clark of LockedOnChiefs reported that Ross did walk over to the cart under his own power. Clark also later reported that Ross returned to practice. This was likely a bathroom break or something to that effect.
Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney comes up limping after a play in team drills, but doesn't leave practice
Clark also happened to notice that WR Kadarius Toney seemed to be injured after taking a hit during 7-on-7 at practice. He removed his helmet and went to the sideline for a few plays, but eventually returned to the field without being checked out by the training staff.
Staying healthy is going to be paramount to Toney's chances of making the 53-man roster this year. He's been getting a lot of work with the first-team offense and not just at the wide receiver position either.
