Jaguars get concerning injury update on star defender just days before matchup with Chiefs in Week 5
Some concerning injury news for the Jaguars heading into their Week 5 tilt with Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line might luck out in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jaguars star defensive lineman Travon Walker suffered a wrist injury in Week 4 that saw him seek out expert opinions. On Thursday, Jags head coach Liam Coen announced to the media that Walker underwent a minor surgical procedure on his wrist. Coen has not yet ruled Walker out for Week 5’s game against the Chiefs on “Monday Night Football.” In fact, he says that the former No. 1 overall pick will “do everything in his power” to play, via ESPN radio’s Mia O’Brien.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Wednesday that a source described Walker as “week-to-week.”
Even if Walker does play, he’ll likely be somewhat limited in effectiveness because of the injury. Defensive linemen use their hands and wrists quite frequently when it comes to getting to the quarterback.
The Jags are middle of the pack in terms of sacks (7), but rank 10th in the NFL in pressures (35) through the first four weeks of the 2025 NFL season, according to Pro Football Reference. If Jacksonville were to lose a player like Walker for Week 5, that would only make pressuring and sacking Patrick Mahomes more difficult.
Mahomes has been sacked seven times and pressured 31 times through the first four games of the 2025 season. In three games against Kansas City since entering the league, Walker has recorded seven total tackles, two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hit. In four games this season, Walker has already recorded two sacks and six total pressures.
Jags DL Travon Walker Quick Facts:
- Former No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Georgia.
- Won a national championship with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2021.
- Coming off back-to-back seasons with 10 or more sacks.
The Chiefs will have to watch out for turnovers, regardless of Travon Walker’s status
Jacksonville’s pressure and sack numbers contribute to the fact that this club leads the NFL with 13 takeaways, including a league-high nine interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
The Chiefs are one of three teams in the NFL, alongside the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles, to turn the football over only once this season. They’ll need to keep that up against an opportunistic Jaguars team, whether Walker plays on “Monday Night Football” or not.
