The 2024 NFL season was just the tip of the iceberg for Kansas City Chiefs rookie WR Xavier Worthy, at least that's what JuJu Smith-Schuster believes.
Worthy is fresh off a dominant rookie campaign in Kansas City, appearing in every possible regular-season and postseason game. He finished the year with 101 touches for 1,037 scrimmage yards and 12 total touchdowns.
The 2024 first-round pick played up to his potential in Year 1, getting better with each passing week. It was necessary as the team dealt with major injuries at the wide receiver position during the season. By Week 4, second-year star Rashee Rice and top free agent Hollywood Brown had been sidelined by injury.
With both Smith-Schuster and Worthy out at star QB Patrick Mahomes' throwing sessions in Texas, the veteran wideout sees even more potential in Worthy's future.
"(Xavier Worthy) has been awesome," Smith-Schuster said. "He has matured as a player, and he's playing to his potential. I feel like he hasn't reached his full potential. You know, he's kind of like the rookie who's still growing, and I feel like he's a guy who's going to have an explosive year this year."
The Chiefs hope to see a healthy trio of Worthy, Rice, and Brown available with complements like Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore, and Nikko Remigio to unlock the passing game. They saw glimpses of what the offense could be late in the year when Brown returned from his sternoclavicular joint injury. Those glimpses were promising and have led to quite a bit of excitement in the building, given Rice's progress in his injury recovery and Brown's return in free agency.
Having all those players on the field together could be the key to Worthy's growth in 2025, as he seeks to become a more consistent threat in intermediate-to-deep passing concepts. Of course, Worthy will have to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump that some players go through during their second NFL season.
