When the Kansas City Chiefs hold their media availability during the week, there is a whiteboard where the PR department writes the names of the players and coaches expected to speak. It's always subject to change, and sometimes there are unscheduled additions.
The team initially listed Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and Chris Jones ahead of practice. However, after Mahomes spoke, it was WR Kadarius Toney who took the lectern to address the media.
Toney, of course, is coming off of an abysmal Week 1 performance that saw him targeted five times to the tune of one reception for a single yard. On Wednesday, he faced the music for his poor performance. KLKC Radio's Darren Smith asked Toney about what happened last Thursday against the Detroit Lions.
"The reality, I look at is as I told Coach (Reid), I told Pat (Mahomes), I told all the guys — That's on me," Toney said. "At the end of the day, y'all count on me and rely on me to make certain plays and I've got to be able to do that. There ain't really no excuse, nothing you can blame it on."
Whether Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, or anyone else has attempted to shoulder some blame, Toney doesn't seem to accept any of the possible excuses. He says he could have and should have made the plays his team needed him to make in Week 1.
So, what exactly is he working on to ensure that those same issues don't pop up again when he faces the Jacksonville Jaguars?
"I just have to put the work in," Toney said. "I'll spend 30 minutes after practice, catching on the Juggs machine, catching from the quarterback. Whatever I've got to do, I just have to make sure that I show up when it's time."
As far as having a short memory is concerned, Toney will attempt to put that platitude of NFL football test in Week 2.
"That's part of the thinking, I'm always just moving forward," Toney said. "I'm thinking about the next week and how I can make plays, you know. I'm not dwelling on the past."
