The Kansas City Chiefs are getting that much closer to the return of RB Isiah Pacheco and DE Charles Omenihu. The results of the team's latest flurry of roster moves are indicative of that.
On Tuesday, the team announced seven combined roster moves involving the active roster and practice squad. The most notable moves include the addition of LT D.J. Humphries to the 53-man roster, an injury to K Spencer Shrader leading to the practice squad signing of former Chiefs K Matthew Wright, and the placement of TE Peyton Hendershot on injured reserve.
Those aren't the only moves the team made, though. . .
Early-season Chiefs trade acquisition Cameron Thomas waived
The Chiefs acquired Thomas in a 53-man roster cutdown trade with the Arizona Cardinals. His size and profile match what Steve Spagnuolo typically likes out of his pass rushers, but he was unable to put things together in his limited opportunities on the field. Thomas appeared in just four games, recording no official game stats. He was a healthy scratch most weeks for Kansas City. He didn't provide the juice the Chiefs had hoped to find. With the recent addition of Joshua Uche and the impending return of Charles Omenihu, he became expendable.
Lucas Niang and Truman Jones were released from the practice squad
Former 2020 third-round draft pick Lucas Niang and former 2022 UDFA Truman Jones both saw their contracts terminated from the practice squad. Niang never could seem to recover from his college hip and NFL knee injury, but he really hurt himself by opting out of his rookie season during the COVID year. It always felt like that decision eroded some of the coaching staff's trust and he never truly regained it. As for Jones, his inability to see the field with all the team's pass-rush issues put the writing on the wall.
Rookie TE Baylor Cupp returns from injury
A bit of a forgotten man for Kansas City, Cupp is an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech who landed on the Chiefs' practice squad after 53-man roster cuts. He was quietly placed on the practice squad injured list at the end of September with an undisclosed injury. This list operates similarly to the Reserve/Injured list. He needed to miss a minimum of four games before the team could reactivate him to the practice squad. Cupp had a strong preseason for Kansas City as a blocker, especially on special teams. He could be tabbed to fill in for Peyton Hendershot.
This all paves the way toward. . .
Isiah Pacheco's activation from the Reserve/Injured list and Charles Omenihu's activation from the Reserve/PUP list. The team has 51 spaces on their active roster, indicating they've got two open spots waiting for Pacheco and Omenihu, who are on their third week of practice since their 21-day practice window opened ahead of Week 11's tilt with the Buffalo Bills. All the Chiefs need to do is simply activate both players to the 53-man roster with no other corresponding transactions. They'll be afforded the opportunity to play in Week 13 against the Raiders should the coaching and training staff clear them to play.
