The Kansas City Chiefs were back at practice on Thursday as they get ready to face the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid briefed the media on the latest injury news ahead of practice. Four players remain out, while two key players on each side of the ball return to football activities after not participating the day prior.

"As far as the injuries go, Skyy Moore won't practice today," Reid said. "Derrick Nnadi won't practice. (Isiah) Pacheco did the walkthrough, but won't practice. And then Joe Thuney won't practice today. Everyone else will go."

Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that S Mike Edwards (concussion) would be back out on the practice field on Thursday. It suggests he's tracking to clear the NFL return-to-play protocols (read more about those here) ahead of Sunday's game against the Ravens. Chiefs RG Trey Smith (illness) is also expected to return to practice.

Did LB Willie Gay Jr. have a setback?

Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. was a late addition to last week's injury report, also exiting Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills early. He was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday due to a neck injury.

"His neck is stiff," Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters. "He just can't turn it right now. It's getting better, but that's what happened during the game. Just it wasn't working. Yeah, it got worse during the game."

Gay Jr. is expected to practice again on Thursday, but it's unclear if he'll remain limited with the neck injury.

"He's a big part of our defense," Reid said. "I wouldn't slight Drue (Tranquill) for the job he did. Willie's a good player. He's part of the success that we've had."

Right now, the coaching staff doesn't seem to have a solid answer on his availability for the upcoming week.

"I don't know where we'll be right now," Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo said of Gay Jr.'s injury. "He adds a piece in passing downs."

Updates on Joe Thuney, Prince Tega Wanogho

Chiefs starting LG Joe Thuney remains absent from practice with a right pec strain. It'll be a stretch for him to practice at all this week, which typically would lead to a player being ruled out under Andy Reid, but I'm told Thuney is one of the few veterans the team would entrust to play without practicing all week. While it's unlikely that Thuney is ready in time for the AFC title game, the training staff will give him every opportunity to prove otherwise.

You might have noticed that Prince Tega Wanogho was back at practice on Wednesday after being designated to return from injured reserve. I'm told that if he has no setbacks during the practice week, the team could seek to activate him to the 53-man roster. They would need a corresponding roster move to make room for Wanogho if that were to happen.

Observations:

  • Blaine Gabbert is back at practice as a full participant.
  • Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney was downgraded to a limited participant in practice. That isn't a good sign for his availability on Sunday.
