The Kansas City Chiefs were without two defensive players during Friday's practice session ahead of their Week 4 tilt with the New York Jets.

Noah Gray (illness) returned to practice on Friday, but both LB Nick Bolton (ankle) and CB Jaylen Watson (shoulder) missed the final practice session of the week. Bolton missed his sixth consecutive practice and Watson his second consecutive.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave an update on their status after practice:

"The only two that didn't practice today were (Nick) Bolton and Jaylen Watson," Reid said. "(Jaylen Watson) has a shoulder strain. Most likely he'll be out along with Bolton."

Drue Tranquill part deux

This will be the second consecutive game missed by Bolton, which means it'll be the second consecutive game with Drue Tranquill wearing the green dot for Kansas City. This week in New York, he expects things to be a tad easier.

“Yeah, as a defense away, games tend to be a little bit easier,” Tranquill told reporters on Wednesday. “In Arrowhead, (it is) very, very loud. And so it was a challenge for me in my first time calling the signals, you know, calling the game for the full time, you've got to be good with your hand signals. So not only do you have to know verbally the checks and the communication, you have to know them all via sign language via hand signals to get to the guys. And so it was a challenge. It was a good challenge. We played well.”

Chiefs LB Brendan Daly lauded Tranquill for his performance in Week 3 against the Bears.

"I would say he did an excellent job," Daly said. "The communication on the field was really good, he got us in and out of a couple checks, (he) managed the game well – (it) wasn’t perfect, there were a couple things that I think even he would tell you he’d like to fix or correct but based on what he had on his plate I thought he did a really nice job.”

With another week of practice under his belt, Tranquill should be that much better in his new role.

Observations:

  • Noah Gray was a full participant in the final practice of the week after missing the first two sessions with an illness.
  • Despite being limited in practice all week, the Chiefs did not assign game status designations to either Chris Jones or Kadarius Toney.
  • With Jaylen Watson ruled out, expect that Nic Jones could see his first action of his NFL career in Week 4.
