The Kansas City Chiefs are back in their normal practice routine ahead of Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.
"Yeah, it's kind of cool, you kind of go back to installing the base offense," Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said. "Obviously, we have the whole entire game plan in, but you really focus on that like you would do in a normal week and try to make sure you were ready to go. You have media and stuff like that you have to do, but at the same time it's a normal week now. We're going to get back to practice and do what we do for a normal game day."
In the spirit of normalcy, the Chiefs also have some injury news to report to get things started for this week.
Chiefs make roster moves involving injured players
In an expected move ahead of the Super Bowl, the Chiefs placed DL Charles Omenihu on injured reserve. Omenihu suffered a torn ACL during the team's AFC title game win over the Baltimore Ravens. He's slated for surgery to repair the injury within the week.
In a corresponding move, the Chiefs activated WR Skyy Moore to the 53-man roster from injured reserve. Moore returns to action after having missed the past six games on injured reserve with a knee injury. There is no guarantee that Moore will be active for the Super Bowl, but this gives them the option. His practice window was set to expire, which means without an activation he would have been stuck on injured reserve.
Moore suffered a setback when he was first designated to return from injured reserve and the Chiefs dialed him back to a non-participant in practice because of it. During the bye week last week, Moore was listed as a limited participant in practice all three days.
The latest update on Chiefs LG Joe Thuney
There remain conflicting reports on Thuney's chances of playing in Super Bowl LVIII.
Andy Reid threw a bucket of cold water on the situation on Tuesday after telling reporters the week prior that he wasn't ruling out the possibility of him playing. Now, according to NFL Network's James Palmer, those around Thuney still believe he has a chance to play.
Thuney has told reporters on multiple occasions this week that he's taking things one day at a time.
The latest Chiefs injury report ahead of Super Bowl LVIII:
| Player | Injury | Participation |
|---|---|---|
LG Joe Thuney | Pectoral | DNP |
RB Jerick McKinnon (IR) | Groin | LP |
WR Richie James | Foot | FP |
DT Chris Jones | Quad | FP |
WR Skyy Moore | Knee | FP |
RB Isiah Pacheco | Toe/Ankle | FP |
WR Rashee Rice | Ankle | FP |
CB L’Jarius Sneed | Calf | FP |
OT Prince Tega Wanogho (IR) | Quad | FP |
KEY: DNP = Did not participate | LP = Limited participation | FP = Full participation | NIR = Not injury related
Observations:
- The Chiefs are surprisingly healthy, dipping below 10 names on the injury report for the first time in several weeks.
- Jerick McKinnon was a limited participant in practice. Andy Reid considered described his chances of playing in the Super Bowl as slim, but given he's limited in practice, it's not none.
- As for Joe Thuney, a DNP in practice today doesn't bode well for the All-Pro guard playing in the Super Bowl despite what people in his circle tend to think.
