Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided his typical pre-practice injury update to kick the practice week off on Wednesday.
He started off by explaining that just a single player would miss practice to start the week, with two defenders returning to action after missing the Week 4 game against the New York Jets.
"Alright, as far as the injuries go, Matt Dickerson, his knee swole up a little bit," Reid said. "He'll be alright. It's just a swollen knee, so he won't practice today. Everybody else will practice. Jaylen Watson will give it a whirl as will Nick Bolton. They both just went through the walkthrough."
Nick Bolton's return could signal decrease in playing time for Drue Tranquill
Bolton has missed the past two games for Kansas City with an ankle sprain, paving the way for increased playing time for Drue Tranquill, who filled in as the team's MIKE linebacker. This past week, Tranquill played 100% of the defensive snaps for the first time in his Chiefs career.
Tranquill has filled in nicely for Bolton, recording 16 total tackles, a half-sack, and a forced fumble in the past two games. Bolton, however, is known as one of the team's top defensive leaders, and a big-time playmaker after a scoop-and-score touchdown in Super Bowl LVII. If he's even close to fully healthy in his return from injury, expect that Tranquill will revert to a sub-package role where he plays around 30-40% of the defensive snaps for Kansas City.

| Player | Injury | Participation |
|---|---|---|
DT Matt Dickerson | Knee | DNP |
LB Nick Bolton | Ankle | LP |
CB Jaylen Watson | Shoulder | LP |
LB Jack Cochrane | Calf | FP |
DL Chris Jones | Groin | FP |
DE George Karlaftis | Knee | FP |
CB L’Jarius Sneed | Knee | FP |
WR Kadarius Toney | Toe | FP |
LB Drue Tranquill | Wrist | FP |
KEY: DNP = Did not participate | LP = Limited participation | FP = Full participation | NIR = Not injury related
Observations:
- Four fewer players on the injury report to start the practice week this time.
- New additions include Cochrane and Tranquill, who were full participants. Still, this is worth monitoring with Cole Christiansen (practice squad) injured and Bolton still returning from injury.
- Limited practices from Bolton and Watson are a good sign to start the week. Should they progress on Thursday that'd be a great sign. Typically, Andy Reid requires one full practice from players for them to avoid a game status designation in a return from injury.
