Latest injury update on Chiefs RG Trey Smith is not the news that Kansas City wanted to hear ahead of Thanksgiving game vs. Cowboys
The Kansas City Chiefs will be without starting RG Trey Smith for some time as he deals with multiple ankle injuries.
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered multiple injuries in their Week 12 win over the Indianapolis Colts, but none were more concerning than the injury to starting RG Trey Smith.
Smith suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter when he was rolled up on from behind. The team took him out for a series to tape his ankle, and he tried to come back in the next series. At halftime, the team reevaluated Smith and ruled him out for the remainder of the game. Now, we know exactly what he’s up against, and it isn’t what the team wanted to hear.
Chiefs RG Trey Smith suffered multiple types of ankle sprain in the Week 12 win over Colts
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chiefs starting RG Trey Smith suffered both high and low ankle sprains. He’s expected to miss time with the injuries, including the upcoming Thanksgiving game against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.
This offseason, Smith signed a four-year contract extension worth $94 million, with $70 million guaranteed. The deal made him the highest-paid offensive guard in NFL history.
I’m told that Smith’s injury could cost him anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks, depending on the grade of the high ankle sprain. It remains to be seen if injured reserve is an option here. Regardless, it’s a significant blow to the Chiefs’ rushing attack, which just seemed to find its footing in the Week 12 win over the Colts. Just check out Kareem Hunt’s rushing success rates before and after Smith’s injury in Week 12.
Mike Caliendo replaced Smith in the Week 12 win over the Colts. He’s expected to fill in for Smith while he recovers from the injury, with second-year OL Hunter Nourzad shifting into the team’s interior backup role. The Chiefs also have second-year OL C.J. Hanson on the practice squad.
This isn’t exactly the week the Chiefs want to be short-handed on the interior offensive line, as the Cowboys have made some big moves to reinforce that part of their defense, including acquiring DTs Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams.
