The Kansas City Chiefs continue to reunite with former players on the offensive side of the ball.
When media members were allowed into the team's locker room on Thursday, they were greeted by former Chiefs TE Jody Fortson. It wasn't just a coincidence, though. Fortson is back with the team after leaving this offseason to join the Miami Dolphins as a free agent.
According to Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick, the Chiefs have re-signed Fortson to the practice squad. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 226 pounds, Fortson originally joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent wide receiver out of Valdosta State University in 2019. He spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad in Kansas City through Super Bowl LIV, transitioning to the tight end position.
He'd make the Chiefs' active roster for the first time in 2021, appearing in just six games before suffering a torn Achilles that would end his season. He missed the entire 2023 NFL season with a shoulder injury. Fortson appeared in just 21 games with two career starts (including postseason). He amassed 14 receptions for 199 yards and four touchdowns in those game appearances for Kansas City.
While injuries have hampered his career, Fortson provides another steady presence for the Chiefs at the tight end position. He'll wear jersey No. 89 in his return as his No. 88 is currently occupied by practice squad TE Peyton Hendershot.
Per Derrick, the Chiefs also re-signed RB Keaontay Ingram to the practice squad. That means there is also another transaction we don't yet know about. They had a single free spot on the practice squad after they promoted Kareem Hunt to the 53-man roster on Tuesday. With injuries around the league, it's possible that player was poached from the practice squad. It's also possible the Chiefs promoted another player to the 53-man roster as they still have a vacancy there following Keaontay Ingram's release.
Chiefs’ injury situation is the complete opposite of the Chargers’ injury situation heading into Week 4
The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers have released their first injury reports of the week.
