The Kansas City Chiefs made a pair of roster moves ahead of their Week 8 tilt with the Denver Broncos. First comes some injury-related news and second a single practice squad elevation for Sunday afternoon's game.
The team announced on Saturday that they had placed LB Nick Bolton on injured reserve. This was an expected move after Bolton recently had surgery to repair his dislocated wrist. He'll be required to be on injured reserve for at least four weeks before the team can designate him to return and open up his 21-day practice window.
The other decision comes with special teams in mind. The Chiefs elevated S Deon Bush from the practice squad via standard elevation. This is his first practice squad elevation of the season. The move comes with Justyn Ross being placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List. He played over 30% of the special teams snaps in Kansas City on a weekly basis. Bush was a multiphase special teamer in 2022 and finished within the top 5 in special teams snaps for the season.
This means the Chiefs will only have 52 players on the roster for Week 8. Ross no longer counts against the 53-man roster given his placement on the Commissioner's Exempt List.
Ultimately, the Chiefs still have two free spaces on the 53-man roster heading into their Week 9 match with the Miami Dolphins. It is possible that one reason they've elected to leave these spaces open is because of the trade deadline on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Brett Veach has already made one deal to acquire a player (Mecole Hardman), but could he have another player in his sights?
There's also the possibility that WR Richie James could soon make his return from injured reserve. Andy Reid indicated that James is "close" during his media availability on Friday.
