The 2024 NFL free agency period doesn’t officially open until Wednesday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m. ET, but the frenzy will get started right away.
The NFL's legal tampering period begins on Monday, March 11 at Noon ET. Before you know it there will be a flood of new deals agreed upon across the league, sending pending free agents to new teams for the 2024 NFL season.
Below we'll be keeping track of every move that the Kansas City Chiefs make from the start of the legal tampering period through the various waves of free agency. They've already re-signed LB Drue Tranquill to ensure he does not become a free agent. They also signed DT Chris Jones to a record-setting contract extension.

Players re-signed ahead of 3/11
Day 1: 3/11 – Legal Tampering Kickoff
- Per Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick, the Chiefs have agreed to terms with LS James Winchester on a new contract. A three-time Super Bowl champion in LIV, LVII, and LVIII, 2024 will mark the 34-year-old's tenth season with Kansas City.
- The Chiefs are bringing back ERFA CB Nazeeh Johnson for 2024 sources confirm to A to Z Sports, along with three other ERFAs.
- The Chiefs announced they've tendered all five of their ERFAs with LB Jack Cochrane being the only previously unreported deal. Players with two accrued seasons will be paid $985K in 2024.
- Chiefs P Tommy Townsend will officially leave to join the Houston Texans in free agency on a two-year deal. The writing was on the wall after the team signed Matt Araiza to a deal ahead of free agency.
- Chiefs backup LG Nick Allegretti is heading to the NFC, set to join the Commanders on a three-year deal. It's a well-deserved opportunity after his Super Bowl LVIII heroics.
Day 2: 3/12 – Legal Tampering Continues
- The Chiefs have signed former Bengals TE Irv Smith Jr. to a one-year deal. This is their first outside free agent signing.
- The Chiefs are re-signing S Deon Bush. This will be Bush's third year in Kansas City.
- The Saints plan to sign Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. on a one-year deal. He'll reunite with a trio of former Chiefs teammates in The Big Easy.
- The Chiefs restructured Patrick Mahomes' contract to free a significant amount of salary cap space.
Day 3: 3/13 – New League Year Begins
- Ahead of the start of the new league year, Chiefs LB Drue Tranquill revealed that Mike Pennel is set to re-sign with Kansas City. We were quickly able to verify that Pennel will return on a one-year deal.
Day 4: 3/14 – New League Year Day 2
- The Chiefs are running it back with most of their interior defensive line from 2023. Tershawn Wharton is the latest player to re-sign with the team on a one-year deal.
- Former Chiefs TE Jody Fortson is signing a one-year deal with the Dolphins.
- The Chiefs bring back another interior defensive lineman, this time former 2018 draft pick Derrick Nnadi.
- The Chiefs added WR Hollywood Brown on a one-year prove-it deal.
