The Kansas City Chiefs learned a lesson the hard way on the first night of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Some fans and analysts were a bit surprised that the Chiefs didn't make a move in the draft's first round.
There were numerous trades that went down and at one point it felt likely that Kansas City would be one of the teams that would make a deal. Instead, the Chiefs stayed put at No. 31 and made a solid selection in defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah.
There's a reason why the Chiefs didn't make a trade on night one of the draft and it's not because they didn't try.
According to Kansas City general manager Brett Veach, the price to trade up in the draft was "steep".
Veach also said point-blank that several AFC teams weren't interested in making a deal with the Chiefs.
If there's a downside to winning a Super Bowl (and there really isn't — that's what it's all about, after all), it's that the team that's on top of the mountain usually gets shunned a bit when it comes to trade talks. The Chiefs are the team to beat in the NFL for the foreseeable future — everyone else is chasing Kansas City right now. It's understandable that teams (especially AFC teams) don't want to help the Chiefs improve their roster.
The good news for Kansas City, though, is that their roster doesn't need much help. Even if the Chiefs made zero selections in the draft, they'd still be the Super Bowl favorites entering the 2023 season.
