We're less than a week away from the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions kicking off the 2023 NFL season.
The game is set to be played on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7:20 p.m. CT, but that doesn't mean they'll get the typical Thursday night broadcast team. The game is set to be played on NBC, the network in charge of "Sunday Night Football."
Why is this the case? It's because NBC has the season opener as part of its contract with the NFL, and that game has always been played on the Thursday after Labor Day since 2002.
That means fans will get typical NBC "Sunday Night Football" broadcasters on the call during the game. Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth will be in the booth. Tirico will serve as the play-by-play announcer, and Collinsworth will provide color commentary.
Melissa Stark will be the sideline reporter for the game.
For the superstitious fans out there: The Chiefs won all three of their "Sunday Night Football" games with Tirico and Collinsworth on the call last season. They also won the AFC divisional round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which was also called by Tirico and Collinsworth.
