The last time the Kansas City Chiefs played Jared Goff, who is now the quarterback of the Detroit Lions, fireworks happened. At the time, it was considered one of the greatest regular season games ever. The Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams ended up scoring a combined 105 points.

As they say, it was a "shootout for the ages."

Now, while it isn't against the Rams, we could see the same thing on Thursday, when the NFL has decided to open the season up with the Lions and Chiefs going head to head.

"Yeah, if it happens, you embrace it," Goff said about a shootout happening again. "I know, certainly on defense, they don't want it to be a shootout, but offensively, if that's the way the game goes, you've got to just kind of go with it and make the plays that are there, and yeah, that one was a shootout for the ages and a fun one."

That game saw the Rams win by three, and both teams ended up having pretty successful seasons. It was Patrick Mahomes' first year as a starting quarterback. Had the Chiefs beat the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship like they were supposed to, we would have had a Super Bowl rematch of the two teams.

But the Patriots ended up keeping that offense at bay and beat the Rams in what was a defensive game for the ages, as they say. In 2018, seeing a game like that wasn't nearly as common as it is today.

Now, while we don't have games like that all the time, we often have games with similar offensive outputs. Maybe the Chiefs and Rams started something.

"I don't think I saw it as like a bigger meaning than just a Monday Night Football game," Goff continued. "I think it was two really good offenses, and there were some defensive scores in that game, too. It just was kind of some fireworks, and we were able to score last. That was kind of the thing; it was like, who was going to have the ball last? It's what it felt like, and we were able to score last and finish the game."

Mahomes and the Chiefs have since learned from that game. Whoever has the ball last wins; we have seen that several times with the Chiefs since then. Does 13 seconds ring a bell?

That game may not have been the one that sparked offensive output like we see today, but it certainly sparked something. The Chiefs and Lions could do the same thing on Thursday.

The Lions are no walk-over like they have been in the past. This is not an automatic win, and there is a big chance they will win this game on Thursday night. Detroit had one of the better offenses last season, as their defense was a big issue.

This offseason, they made some additions to their defense that should help bring a better balance to their roster. Either way, it's going to be the perfect way for the NFL season to get kicked off.
