The Kansas City Chiefs had a whirlwind of a game on Monday Night Football against the Las Vegas Raiders. And, as these games are usually hard-fought, Monday was too.
The Chiefs came into this game with some struggles a few weeks ago, especially on special teams. The Indianapolis Colts, a team that is not very good, got the better of the Chiefs in Week 3, in large part because of the special teams' play.
By now, you all know about the Chiefs cutting backup kicker Matt Ammendola after the game, and him missing a game-tying field goal for the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.
Week 5 for the Chiefs, though, was a bit different in terms of special teams, just like Week 4 against the Buccaneers.
New backup kicker Matthew Wright did his job against the Raiders and Mahomes was here for it.
"It wasn't about me going for it," Mahomes said. "I literally asked [Dave] Toub, can he kick a 59-yard field goal, it's a new kicker, so you don't know or not, and so if it's Harrison [Butker], I'm probably just like, go out there and kick it. So once we called the timeout and discussed it, Toub said I have confidence he can make it, and the kid went out there and kicked it. You trust in your coaches, they decide to go with the field goal, and we executed, and it ended up winning us the football game."
Wright has been huge for the Chiefs for two straight weeks when they have needed him the most. When Butker gets back fully healthy, I'm confident Wright has earned himself a contract either with the Chiefs or another team just because of how well he has kicked.
The Chiefs have needed it, too. And, how about Mahomes hyping up his new kicker that way. Mahomes has stepped up as a leader and giving praise to his new kicker is just one more example of him showing that.
