Per a report from NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back La'Mical Perine.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, as Perine had a strong preseason last year and seemed to fit well in coach Andy Reid's offense. Some believed Perine had the inside track on being the No. 3 running back for the Chiefs this year and possibly giving Clyde Edwards-Helaire a run for the No. 2 spot.

Perine spent most of 2023 on the practice squad. In Week 18 he had a productive game against the Los Angeles Chargers, totaling 109 total yards on 24 touches. A three-year NFL veteran, Perine has 340 rushing yards and two touchdowns for his career.

This moves probably signals that the Chiefs are feeling good about their running back room. They now have seven RBs on their roster, so expect them to cut down even more at the position over the next couple months before they head to training camp in late July.

Some guys to keep an eye on are second year player Deneric Prince, undrafted free agent Emani Bailey and former rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit. Third year RB Isiah Pacheco will remain the unquestioned starter, with former first-round draft pick Edwards-Helaire backing him up in a third down RB role.
