The Kansas City Chiefs officially introduced new WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown during a conference call with local reporters on Monday. It was Brown's first opportunity to show Kansas City what he was all about after signing a one-year deal with the team. He made a strong first impression after being bombarded with questions.
Asked about his fit with the Chiefs' offense under Andy Reid and Matt Nagy, Brown explained his versatility can be a major asset given the pieces the team already has.
“I feel like I can move around and do different things,” Brown said. “I can stretch the field and there are guys here (Travis) Kelce, the running backs, (Rashee) Rice, (Kadarius) Toney – they’re weapons here. I am going to come in and my game can complement the guys that they have here."
What he's perhaps most looking forward to is getting to work with the combo of Reid and Patrick Mahomes. He even offered up some unprovoked thoughts on Reid's genius in the same breath.
"He’s a mastermind,” Brown said of Reid.
Can Brown's skills be utilized to the fullest in Kansas City?
While Brown's ability to stretch the field vertically is sorely needed in Kansas City, Dez Bryant isn't the only one who feels Brown has been misused during his NFL career.
There seems to be a sense from Brown that he's not been able to fully showcase his skills as a wide receiver during his stops in Arizona and Baltimore. While both were necessary for his personal growth, he's seemingly ready to make the most of his opportunity on the football field in Kansas City.
“Being in this system, I feel like I’ll be able to showcase my skill set,” Brown said. “I still feel like it’s a lot of my game that I haven’t been able to show to you. That’s what I’m excited about most being here, is to just put my best foot forward and show what I can do.”
Andy Reid rarely lacks creativity when designing plays for his star players. Brown should be featured on designed touches just as frequently as he's sent deep in the passing game. It's a skillset the Chiefs have lacked in a singular wide receiver since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2022 NFL season.
It's also a skill set that Brown hasn't fully been able to utilize since his days at the University of Oklahoma. In Baltimore, he was hitched to a run-heavy scheme. In Arizona, organizational dysfunction, quarterback play, and more are to blame.
If there is anywhere that can provide the opportunity that Brown seeks, you better believe it's in Kansas City with the back-to-back Super Bowl champs.
