The Kansas City Chiefs waited too long, and now it will cost them millions.

Everyone has been waiting for one of the two top-five defensive tackles in the league to announce their contract extension. New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones have both been expecting an extension.

This is how the Chiefs just lost millions. Williams signed his extension on Thursday. The four-year, $96 million deal is the second biggest deal ever for a defensive tackle behind only Aaron Donald.

Since the Chiefs waited, they now have to pay Jones more than that because he is better. Previously the second highest-paid defensive tackle was Jeffery Simmons of the Tennessee Titans, who was earning $23 million per year. Now, Williams is earning $24 million per year, behind Donald's $31.

If the Chiefs had signed Williams earlier, they could have gotten ahead of the trend and signed him for around the same, or even lower. Now, they will be looking at at least $25-29 million a year for Jones.
