The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need a veteran edge rusher to help the young group out, so one NFL analyst has the perfect fit.
The Chiefs only have a few needs for their roster. They have everything figured out regarding what the core group of guys will look like in 2023. However, they still need a veteran at one of the youngest position groups on the team. Getting a veteran edge rusher will be cheap; plus, most guys that are up there in age will want to play for Kansas City; that way, they have a shot at a ring.
One guy who is a perfect fit, according to a CBS Sports analyst, is Jason Pierre-Paul, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge rusher that beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl; a major reason some fans will be against this move. However, he will only help the Chiefs and the young guys improve. Here is what Jeff Kerr said of JPP:
Pierre-Paul was one of those veteran edge rushers the Ravens employed last season, finishing with 21 pressures and three sacks. No longer the dominant edge rusher he once was, Pierre-Paul would better be suited as a No. 3 or No. 4 pass-rusher on a contending team. Enter Kansas City, which has George Karlaftis and Charles Omenihu as starters and first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah as a developmental player set to take more snaps later in the year. Pierre-Paul would fit in as an edge rusher who can just focus on going after the quarterback in Steve Spagnuolo's defense. The Chiefs always seem to have a veteran pass-rusher on the roster, so don't be surprised if they add one. – Jeff Kerr, CBS Sports
Chiefs fans may hate this move because he helped keep the franchise from getting its third Super Bowl at the time, and then they may have four right now. Grabbing him and cheering for him may be a tough pill to swallow for some fans.
However, a group of Chiefs fans is willing to look past things of that nature if it means their team gets better, and JPP would certainly help the Chief's long-term.
Their edge defender group mainly features Charles Omenihu, George Karlaftis, and rookie Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Having a guy like JPP, who is just six sacks away from 100 career sacks and has already won two Super Bowls, would greatly help the young guys. They would have a guy who has had a ton of success show them how to be a professional.
The Chiefs have signed veteran pass rushers before, and it is usually right before or during training camp, just like they did last season with Carlos Dunlap.
That's exactly what the Chiefs need. Fans already got over the Mike Edwards signing; they can get over this one too.
Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo talks not having a veteran edge rusher in 2023
The Kansas City Chiefs as things currently stand, don’t have one very important thing they have had the last five years or so.
