Chiefs GM names two key factors behind the franchise's dynasty-like success

Brett Veach, Andy Reid, and Patrick Mahomes are what will make the Chiefs the NFL’s next dynasty.

One could easily argue the Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL's newest dynasty.

I mean, the résumé since 2016 is an elite one: The Chiefs have been in three of the last four Super Bowls and have won two of them; and, they've been to five-straight AFC Championship games and have amassed seven-straight AFC West titles, in all.

It's easy to see why all of the above builds an elite résumé. But, the most impressive aspect of all is the Chiefs are doing all of this in a league that's setup up for parity.

In other words: The Chiefs are beating the system and thriving in an environment that makes it hard to even reach mid-status.

“I mean it’s extremely difficult," Chiefs GM Brett Veach said when about the key to maintaining success. … When you have the rapport that we have with my staff and our coaching staff, I think it just helps in that process because you know the scheme and the vision and the fit. I mean we’re all on the same page and I just think the fact that (Head) Coach (Andy Reid) and I have worked together for so long and even (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) Coach Spags and I have been together for a long time now, I think that continuity is something that has really helped us transition to our second part of Pat’s (Mahomes) contract where it is difficult.

"But I think you guys saw last year that all the rookies that we drafted were major contributors. So, I think it’s very difficult to do but I think the continuity plays a huge role in our success.”

Having a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes obviously helps things, but as mentioned earlier, the Chiefs were winning division titles before Mahomes was the starter.

He obviously took the team to the next level and he is obviously what will keep the Chiefs at the top for as long as he's around.

But Mahomes' contract also plays a huge role in the Chiefs' sustained success, which is not something that's common in the NFL.

"I mean it’s a huge advantage for us just because I think we know what our offseason looks like, by and large," said Veach. "It’s always going to change, and the cap is going to go up now, and hopefully now we have had some successful offseasons and everything’s back to normal, knock on wood, things will continue to get better and better and better. But the big piece of that puzzle is something that we have a degree of certainty and things will have to get changed and adjusted as we go there as well.

"But just knowing that Pat (Mahomes) will be here for a long time and knowing that the biggest part of that pie is accounted for just helps us focus our attention on the offense and defensive side and not have to worry about the most important piece."

Mahomes is with the Chiefs through 2031, aka, the next nine seasons. Like Veach explained, it helps him prioritize and approach the team's needs in a more efficient manner. The quarterback position is obviously the NFL's most important position. Using zero resources in attempts to locate a starting QB -and using zero resources for nine seasons, at that- gives any team a major leg up on the competition.

Quarterback contracts typically don't help franchises in the NFL, which is just another tip of the cap to Veach and the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are set up to win and win big, for a long time, as long as they play it smart.

And unfortunately for the NFL, that's exactly what they're doing.
